A COUNCILLOR is predicting problems as a drugs and alcohol advice centre is set up on a Wirral housing estate.
The drop-in unit is to be re-located from a community centre in Carr Bridge Road to a vacant shop at Hoole Road in Woodchurch.
The unit, which is currently run from a single room, has now been adopted by Wirral Primary Care Trust due to its success.
However, Labour councillor John George says that a debate should be held in the community before the move is finalised to listen to residents’ concerns.
He said: “Going ahead without public debate could be problem-atic and contentious with regards to its positioning within the local shopping area.
“Also, due to the change from a retail unit to a drug and alcohol drop-in centre, it should legally go before the planning committee to decide.”
A care trust spokesman said: “This will help provide clients with a state-of-the-art facility when they require advice and support relating to drugs and alcohol.
“Since January, the service has helped and supported more than 100 people and their families.”
Majella Lanigan, Social Partnership Alcohol Project Manager, said: “Being situated on Hoole Road is a perfect place to try to promote change and there is a better chance for the anti-social behaviour to stop by being in that location.
“Many of the people we can treat will pass on a daily basis to shop or collect benefits.
“The drop in centre will be easier access for them to get help when they need it.”
