A WIRRAL restaurant described as a “Tex-Mex heaven” has been awarded a top food hygiene rating.

Low Slow and Dough, located on Claughton Firs in Oxton, serves food inspired by Texas and Mexico, including tacos, smash burgers, and nachos.

The business opened its first venue in May, however, they had been supplying food to Franklyn’s in Heswall and Love Lane Brewery in Liverpool before this.

Now the restaurant is celebrating being awarded a hygiene rating of five - the highest a business can get.

From a score of zero to five, food hygiene ratings are given to food handling businesses after an inspection from the Food Standards Agency has assessed how well they comply with food safety laws.

The rating reflects the standards of food hygiene found on the date of the inspection by the local authority.

What do different food hygiene ratings mean?

  • 5 - Hygiene standards are very good.
  • 4 – Hygiene standards are good.
  • 3 – Hygiene standards are generally satisfactory.
  • 2 – Some improvement is necessary.
  • 1 – Major improvement is necessary.
  • 0 – Urgent improvement is required.

Low Slow and Dough were initially inspected on August 10, where they were hit with a one-star food hygiene rating.

At the time of the report, Ian Marray, owner of Slow and Dough, said he was “working towards developing a set of practices and procedures” that would “guarantee” them achieving a five-star rating, but “admittedly the limited timescale proved a real challenge”.

Speaking of the new five-star hygiene rating, Ian told the Globe: “The recent reinspection couldn’t have gone better.

“Under the guidance of our Environmental Health Officer (EHO) we had quickly rectified the procedural shortcomings originally identified and furthermore we invested in a complete overhaul of our entire kitchen facility.

“As a team we are immensely proud to have regained our 5* hygiene rating. We enlisted the help of a local food safety consultant called Katy Elliott, who was a tremendous support to us over the last six months.

“As an owner I’m delighted that we have been vindicated and the public can once again visit with a renewed confidence in the freshness and quality of the delicious food that we have always produced.

“We’re celebrating with our new ‘Beat the Clock’ offer, where a selected alcoholic or soft drink, one of six burger choices (with fries) and a dessert are as low as £13. To add to that offer were introducing a ‘Bottomless Brunch’ deal on weekends too.”
