Pupils help mayor dig in

PUPILS from Heygarth Primary School and Millfields Primary School helped Wirral's Mayor plant new trees to mark the start of a junction improvement scheme at Eastham Rake and New Chester Road, Eastham.
The scheme involves the widening of Eastham Rake and construction of a new right turn lane out of the road to allow more capacity for vehicles travelling towards the M53 motorway.
In recent months underground services have been moved and the construction of the new road has now commenced.
The improvements have required the removal of mature trees from the corner of Eastham Rake, adjacent to the library.
To replace the trees, Wirral's Mayor Cllr Phil Gilchrist helped to plant three large Rowan trees at the site, aided by school children from Heygarth and Millfields. Further trees will be planted in the Autumn.
Councillor Gilchrist said: "I am delighted that children from the local schools were able to attend and help to plant the trees.
"I hope these trees will soon become fully established and provide colour and interest to this corner."
The junction improvement scheme also includes upgrading the existing traffic signals to provide pedestrian controlled crossing points, reconstruction of the pavements, creation of pedestrian refuges and cycling facilities.
