ARCHAELOGICAL investigations have started in Neston looking for evidence of an ancient settlement.

The results of the investigation will be used in connection with a planning application submitted for a major retail development in the present car park.

The dig, between Brook Street and Raby Road, will establish whether more extensive archaeological work would be needed, if planning permission was granted.

Fragments of memorial stones from the parish church suggest that there has been a settlement at Neston for at least 1,000 years and examination of early maps and other documentary evidence indicate that the western part of the car park, behind the High Street, lay within the original settlement area.

Investigation of sites elsewhere in the area suggest that, if archaeological remains are present, they will consist of pits, gullies, boundary ditches, and postholes cut into the natural sandstone, which is known to lies just beneath the modern ground surface.

Typically, finds might include pottery, animal bones, and other material discarded by Neston's previous inhabitants.

Jane Williamson, the borough council's head of property and support services, said: "We are delighted to have commissioned AOC Archaeology, a local firm based in Tattenhall, to undertake the evaluation of the site at Neston.

"The historical heritage of the town and indeed the Borough of Ellesmere Port and Neston are taken very seriously and any findings of importance will be communicated to the public.

"At this stage of the work, the investigations will be limited to a total of four separate trenches.

"The location of the trenches and their excavation have been arranged to minimise any inconvenience."

Since when did Neston become Part of the Wirral?

The are very keen to distance themselves when it comes to using the refuse disposal centres, so I say leave them as much a part of Cheshire as they wish to be and let a Cheshire newspaper give them column space an leave a Wirral news source for topics involving Wirral issues and residents!!!

As an ex-Nestonian I would be very interested in seeing the results of this research.
As for Neston's current geographical label; until a few years ago Neston had a Liverpool post code (L64) and a postal address of "South Wirral". The Wirral Globe has always been considered a local paper.

you dont half go on Keith.
Historicalyy and geographically Neston is part of Wirral, whether the people who reside (not live)
like it or not.
Those in doubt consult the Hundred of Wirral or the Domesday Book

The current Wirral boundary is political dividing Merseyside and Cheshire. The ancient "Wirral Stone" is actually in Willaston. All "Welcome to Wirral" road signs, should actually say Welcome to Merseyside.

Merseyside was a big mistake. When ancient kingdoms were created natural barriers were used as boundaries, mountains
,and rivers. It is obvious that when they came to Merseyside no one even bothered to visit. Perhaps it was the same Government Department that tried to merge part of the Wallasey constituency with Kirkdale a short time ago-sheer madness. And just to rub salt in the wound we have to pay for the privilege of visiting other parts of the County not like people in Kent or Scotland!!!

Perhaps they will find some evidence of the missing link? It is Neston after all!

We have an exchange programme with Neston where by they send one of their cannibalistic, traveller killing in- bred mutant families over to us for 2 week lessons in torturing and eating hitch hikers etc. There is a 785 year waiting list so maybe less digging and more chainsaw work may help.

How does one get on the waiting list? A couple of weeks away from here would be good, and to learn a skill even better.
