Egg Run cash comes pouring in

THOUSANDS of pounds have been rolling into the Globe-backed Jellybean Kids Appeal thanks to the roaring success of this year's Wirral Egg Run.

The 7000 bikers who took part in the record-breaking event on March 16 also delivered 5000 Easter eggs to children at Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge hospitals.

Debbie Green, fundraising manager for the appeal, which aimed to improve facilties for children visiting Wirral's hospitals, told the Globe: "We're still counting the money because donations are still coming in, but we're well on the way to matching last year's figure.

"Twelve months ago the Run raised over £15,000 and we're certainly in sight of that already. This year it's not just about the collections - many of the bikers were sponsored, too, so I don't think we'll know exactly how much has been raised until the summer."

Launched in September 2005, the four-wish appeal raised more than £1.3m, which has been used to improve facilities for young patients using Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge hospitals.

The first wish was to raise £250,000 for a children's assessment and treatment centre in Arrowe Park Hospital. The centre opened in November.

The second was to raise £70,000 for extra equipment to kit-out the neonatal unit caring for sick, newborn babies. It has enabled the purchase of more incubators and monitors. Wish three was to create on-site accommodation for families of children being treated in hospital. The fourth was for a non-stop assessment area at Clatterbridge Hospital.

Bikers came from across the UK and Europe to take part in numbers bigger than ever before in the event's near-three decade history on March 16.

Organisers described the Run as a 20-mile street party and said it was attended by riders from across the country and mainland Europe. Debbie added: "The feedback from riders, the public and organisers has been fantastic. Once again, a massive and sincere thank you to everyone involved."

A day for every biker to feel a legitimate sense of great pride...

We always get a warm reception from on-lookers, and standing ovations from the older generation who literally applaud us as we drive past.

They know full well that as well as a bit of a jolly, and a spectacle to brighten the day, we bikers are do the run for a good cause, both in terms of cash, giving chocoalte eggs and raising awareness of a worthy cause.

If you took part in the Egg Run in any capacity, take a bow - you've earned it!
