AFTERMATH: The ruined remains of the vehicle lie smouldering

AN investigation has been launched after a car was set on fire and abandoned in Birkenhead Park on Saturday morning.

Nearby residents saw the silver Ford Mondeo being driven through Birkenhead Park at its gates in Ashville road, past the swings and the lake at high speed and deliberately crashed in a small clearing at the end of the lake.

The vehicle was then set alight and abandoned. The fire brigade was called at 7am at the first sounds of an explosion and promptly extinguished and made safe the vehicle.

One reader, who lives near to the park and sent the Globe pictures of firemen tackling the blaze, said: "What a waste of the brigade's time and resources, what a slap in the face for the vehicle owner, the insurance company who will raise the owners and subsequently our own insurance policies.

"In fact, what pain for all the laws abiding good people of Birkenhead.

"Those responsible could not even be botherd fleeing the crime, being joined by two others before strolling to a waiting car and slowly driving away.

"Obviously the is no deterrent to committing this type of crime, no social conscience and no thought to the blood, sweat and tears it takes to buy, maintain and keep legal a motor vehicle at todays crippling prices.

"The police arrived about 20 minutes after the fire brigade had arrived, and left three minutes after that. Would an investigation even be opened? Are there CCTV cameras in the park?

"If not why not, maybe they could stop the lake being used as a bin for cider bottles and plastic bags, make the park a place where people can visit without feeling intimidated, worried for their own safety and for their property and possessions."
