Champions take step closer to retaining crown

REIGNING Wirral Sunday League Premier Division champions New Ferry Wirral Hotel took a step nearer to retaining their crown when they cruised to a comfortable 6-0 win over MSC Eastham.

Sunday's impressive win at Eastham Locks witnessed efforts from Paul Haddock, 2, Mike Barry, Andy Ward, Mike Jones and Tony Leesaw. A vastly superior goal difference is also in New Ferry's favour, as the title race nears its climax.

Hilbre leapfrogged Kent into second place following a 5-1 triumph at Towers and third-placed challengers Lancelyn Glenavon stayed in contention after doubles from Martin Reeve and Ian Sheridan clinched a crucial 4-3 win at Kent.

Man-of-the-match Ian Wallace was a three-goal contributor in Wirral Health's 3-3 draw with Old Market, while Kevin Downey, Davie Watterson and Ben England all made the scoresheet as Sportsmans Victoria beat JEL Electrical 3-0.

Promotion-shy rivals Archers United and Little Brighton both came unstuck in the Division One title race.

Leaders Archers scored via Gary Richards and Alan Lim, but were second best at home to Tixalls, who had Ryan Innes in top form in Sunday's 4-2 victory.

Second-placed Little Brighton, meanwhile, had to settle for a share of the spoils as they were held to a 0-0 stalemate by Red Cat.

Goals by Scott Nixon, Ben Smith, Anthony James, Colin Newton and a stunning 25-yarder from Tony McColgan put Eagle on course for a 5-0 result over Bebington Athletic and two-goal Tommy Smith took the plaudits in PSI's narrow 3-2 win against Kings Security. Robbie Collins was the other marksman.

Despite goals from Gareth Farley and Stuey Thomas, The Yew Tree's encouraging run of form was interrrupted when they lost 4-2 to Village Hotel.

Sunday's Division Two action saw a rejuvenated PSV hit Stanleys Seaview's promotion hopes for six, after efforts from Kyle Hawkins, 2, and Hayden Evans engineered a shock 3-2 triumph.

Big guns New Ferry Town and Euro Wirral took closer order in the title race, following respective 2-0 wins at OC Sports & Leisure and Riverside Town. The two arch rivals meet at Heswall this Sunday afternoon to contest the Wirral & District FA Sunday Junior Cup Final.

Elsewhere, Gladstone Athletic celebrated their first win of the season when they emerged 6-5 victors against The Plough, while a solitary strike from Alan Jones won all three points for Halfway House against Pollards Inn.

The Wirral Sunday League has a limited number of vacancies for season 2008/09.

Application forms can be obtained from League Secretary Dave Lee on (0151) 608-4332.
