'Do-gooders and council need to live in real world . . .'
BEING the lead petitioner of Moreton Common, I would like to respond to the anonymous person who wrote (I'm glad councillor failed to get Leasowe Common re-opened to vehicles', Mailbox, February 27) condemning Cllr Chris Blakeley.
Cllr Chris Blakeley and I have fought to have the Common re-opened in the summer months for the thousands of people who for decades have used this site.
Did the person who condemned Chris Blakeley and rejoiced in Wirral Council's decision to have the gates stay closed not notice that last summer Moreton Common was almost deserted because of the closure?
The 1,100 families who signed the petition are outraged - and what's ironic and absurd is the whole point of the gate closure to begin with has failed miserably.
It was to stop quad and motor bikes using the Common.
Sadly, quite the opposite has happened - no cars can now access the Common, but quad and motor bikes can easily get onto the land and do so on a regular basis.
It's a pity Wirral Council never once took the same measures to stop dozens of cars that are regularly parked for weekend football matches at Lingham Park, which I live opposite, or when 20 or 30-ton fairground vehicles arrive each summer at The Dips at New Brighton and blatantly damage the grassed areas.
The only loser here is the local community. The council must take a long hard look at themselves and take the blame for losing this community spirit.
Finally, what about disabled and elderly people? No-one has considered these unfortunate members of our local community - do they not matter?
I'm afraid the odd do-gooder and the council need to live in the real world and take a long, hard look at themselves and realise that the quad bikes and motor bikes are still misusing the Common - and that the innocent members of the local community and disabled and elderly are the losers.
In this society, that is very sad and wrong!

Lingham Lane,
Moreton

Back in the distant past, I was taught at school that a common belonged to the people. They were free to use it to graze their sheep or other animals at no charge. Does this not mean that the Council have no right to close it to anyone?
I do wish people wouldn't bandy the words do gooder around. It is applied to anyone who doesn't agree with something another person says these days.
My take on this is that if you are not a do gooder then you are a do badder. Neither of which make any grammatical sense.

Public open spaces should be exactly that. Cars, caravans, etc should have no access. There seems to be a sort of tacit permission that allows vehicles to be parked almost anywhere so long as it is convenient to the driver. Quad bikes etc break the law by riding on public spaces so this is a police matter. It would be wise to look at the matter from a more clinical standpoint. Allow cars back on the common - the 4x4s follow, then quad bikes, joy riders etc. What's next and who's going to police it?? Remember these days it's monkey see, monkey do!

Park your car on the road and walk onto the Common, whats your problem ? If you want to sit in your car sit in it while its parked in the road.
Sorted !!
If you have noticed lately brainless fatheads park their cars on the Grass Dips between Harrison Drive and NewBrighton.
This now makes it impossible to let your kids run free without the worry of traffic on the dips.
Get out of your cars and walk a few yards and then we are all happy

Cue the arguments/discussion
s about parking in parents with children and disabled bays in supermarkets. What is wrong with some people?

Leasow common is flanked by two car parcs which are more than adequate for the volume of visitors.
Cllr Blakeley's spokesman here has clearly not read the police report which suggested problems of increased crime resulting from vehicular access to the common. Indeed the very suggestion that the common should ever be open to vehicles is idiotic.
Local people were strongly against it too. Labour Cllr Don Prout completed a survey of local residents and presented his findings to the council committe responsible. The overwhelming view was that the common should stay closed to vehicles.
Incidentally the council did acknowledge that disabled access could be better and I think they have supported a plan to erect new briges into the common for wheelchairs.
As Cllr Blakeley's plan has failed local people can enjoy the common in peace, walk their dogs, play football with the kids or enjoy a picnic, eaxactly what the common should be for.

"Leasowe Commoner" how long have you worked at the council or for labour? A put up job if ever there was. At least have the guts to say who you really are if you want to politically attack Chris Blakeley.
