Police threw a "ring of steel" around Wirral last night in a major crackdown against drugs, guns and car crime.
The operation was the biggest of its kind in the region, and saw more than 250 officers mobilised, stopping hundreds of motorists and rail commuters.
Police said the aim was to prevent the transport of drugs and weapons.
Checkpoints were set up at most major routes, including the M53, the A41, Laird Street, Borough Road, both Mersey tunnels and the bus and rail network.
In all, 39 arrests have been made.
The borough's police chief, Supt Colin Matthews, said: "We are sending a message that Wirral is closed to criminals."
Oficers from the Ministry of Defence provided the operation with sniffer dogs to search for drugs and weapons.
