FORMER Tranmere Rovers goalkeeping legend Eric Nixon has thrown his hat into the ring to be the next Prenton Park manager.

The 43-year-old, who inspired Rovers to victory in the never-to-be-forgotten Division Three Play-Off Final against Bolton at Wembley in the early '90s, believes he has the credentials to revive the Prenton Park club's fortunes.

Nixon, who lives in Tranmere, cost Rovers £60,000 when he joined from Manchester City in season 1986-87. He went on to make 386 appearances. He holds a UEFA A' Licence and other coaching qualifications. Currently, he provides personal training to other goalkeepers and players.

Apart from caretaker boss Jason McAteer, Nixon is the only other person who has publicly confirmed his interest in the vacancy following Brian Little's departure "by mutual consent" two weeks ago.

Chairman Lorraine Rogers is currently drawing up a shortlist of candidates. In a statement on the club website on Friday, the club poured water on what it called "inaccurate" media speculation about who the candidates may be.

"The club does not believe commenting on each rumour would prove worthwhile," the statement said.

Tranmere season tickets for next season are now on sale at Prenton Park or the ticket hotline: 0870 460 3332.

Fans may soon be able to buy more than £100 worth of shares in the club. Rovers, looking at new ways to raise money, believe the scheme could realise £600,000 for first team spending.
