Things are hotting up in the Houlihan's Birkenhead Sunday League . . .

WITH only five or six weeks left of the official season, things are hotting up in the Houlihan's Birkenhead Sunday League . . .

In the Premier Division, Queens Park continued their run of form to take all three points from Houlihan's Variety Club (John Johnson) after a 6-1 result. Scorers for Queens were Lee Gibson, 2, Matty O'Shea, 2, Alan Bull and Kevin Oates.

David Boules and J.P. Cassidy helped Shaftesbury A' to hold onto their position at the top of the table with a reserved 2-1 success over Hoylake Athletic (Simon Herbert).

The only match in Division One saw the teams sharing the points in a 1-1 stalemate. Scorers were Mick Kinsella for Royal Sun Alliance and Chris Thompson for Parkside.

Saddle Club continue to maintain a strong hold on the top of Division Two after beating Wirral Liberals 2-0 with goals by Tom Hodgson and Lewis Chesters.

In Division Three, Wavertree Wanderers beat Bebington Royal British Legion (Dean Morrey) 4-1 with goals by Stu Gimblett, Stu Murphy, Sam Knight and Will Kannot.

It all puts pressure on JB Leasing, who didn't play at the weekend.

Claughton Village Hotel, who are also challenging for the title, currently have four games in hand over the leaders after beating Shaftesbury 'B'. Goals by Steve Kendrick, 2, Ben Hoyle, Chris Gillespie and Graeme Walklett ensure that the top two cannot rest easy just yet.

After last week's victory in the M & A Groundwork Cup semi-finals, AFC Mississippi (Stu Watterson, 2, Gary Brabander) continued their winning ways, putting three past Comecon, who fought back with two goals from Tom Mairs and Antony Mitchell.

In the Youth Division, Newton Athletic failed to score, enabling Heswall to take all three points with goals from Antony Rathbone and Ricky O'Sullivan.

Vauxhall Youth put eight goals past a flagging Shaftesbury with goals by P. Heywood, 2, R. Manders, 2, D. Wilson, 5, and C. Rogers.

It was not so good, however, in the other Vauxhall camp, as the Colts were beaten 3-1 by Victoria Laird Colts, thanks to goals by J. Edwards, D. Thomas and P. Taylor). Rob Wood scored for Vauxhall.

In the Wirral District FA Sunday Amateur Cup Final, Bull Wanderers felt the full force of Argyll, who triumphed 4-2. Argyll's goals came from Joe Curran, 2, Nicky Taylor and Barry Sheldon. Congratulations to the Argyll!!

The Dock had Ian McGraa to thank for the only goal against FC Beehive in a Veronica Conway Cup second round tie.

In the President's Cup semi-finals, Neston Nomads were 5-1 up with goals from Lee Cairns, 2, Richie Foulkes, 2, and Lee Dunbar, only for St John's Celtic to have a late surge, scoring three goals in 10 minutes through Dave Rodrigues, 3, and Tony Jones. But they were unable to find the last goal to give them a chance of gaining a ticket into the final.

Rock Ferry Social's Jamie Kenyon was on the scoresheet again along with Lee Carter and Michael Philips to book their place in the final after a 3-1 win over Heygarth FC (Carl Kavanagh).

The Presidents Cup Final will be played on Sunday, April 20 at Heswall FC between Neston Nomads and Rock Ferry Social.

The David Tacey Cup semi-finals were also played on Sunday, with Wirral Nomads continuing their strong hold, Tom Amis, Victor Thurgill, 4, and Ian Wharton all bagging goals over the Acorn (D. Royle).

Nomads will meet Black Horse in the Final to be played on Friday, April 18 at Heswall FC, who narrowly beat an unlucky Heswall Royal British Legion 3-2. Goals by Kevin Boyland and Ricky Shakeshaft were not enough to stop Black Horse, after an own goal by Heswall opened the door to the victors, who also found the net via a Craig Holman penalty and a 25-yard screamer from John Byrnes.

In the Youth Division, the first of the Cleveland Cup semi-finals went ahead with New Brighton Youth's 12-1 massacre of Neston Nomads. New Brighton's dozen came from Kyle Birch, 3, Carl Murphy, 2, Liam Jameson, 2, Tom Riley, 2, Jack Ashcroft, Mark Goodacre, and Alan Hughes.

This Friday (March 28) sees the Wirral FA Youth Under-18 Cup Final between Ellesmere Port and Vauxhall Motors Youth being staged at Poulton Victoria FC's ground (kick-off 7.30pm).
