Castrol win Pyke Cup for first time
CASTROL Social's name was etched on the Carlsberg West Cheshire League Pyke Cup plinth band for the first time after they overcame strongly-fancied Runcorn Town in Good Friday's final at Vauxhall.
Goals either side of half-time from Gary Scott and Stewart Carroll anchored the Oilmen to a deserved 2-0 victory.
Christleton also sprang a surprise, after Paul Sweeney bagged both goals in a keenly contested 2-1 Chester & District FA Senior Cup Final success against local rivals Upton AA.
In midweek, Poulton Vics progressed to a Cheshire FA Amateur Cup Final showdown with Cammell Laird Reserves after they came from behind to edge a 2-1 decision over rival Division One club Newton.
Second-half substitute Ian Sheridan bagged the winner with a stunning individual effort.
Sheridan came up trumps again at the weekend, when he netted for Vics in their 1-1 stalemate at reigning Division One champions West Kirby.
As a result, the leaders increased their advantage at the top to 10 points and received a further boost when third-placed challengers Cammell Laird Reserves lost 2-1 at home to Aintree Villa. Eric Woodward and Drew Hyland applied the finishing touches for the Racecourse side.
A solitary effort from Danny Andrews earned Upton AA the nod over Heswall, while 90 minutes failed to produce a goal between Ellesmere Port and Blacon YC.
Relegation-threatened Ashville were indebted to goals from Paul Haddock and Davie Johnson for their 2-0 result against Maghull.
A smart double from Tommy Carroll inspired Vauxhall Motors Reserves to a thumping 6-0 triumph over Newton.
In Division Two, Halton laid a strong claim for the runners-up medals, and promotion to the top flight, after John McDonald struck twice in Saturday's 3-1 win over Grange Athletic.
Newly-crowned champions Poulton Vics Reserves overcame Bebington Athletic 2-1, with goals from James Beattie and Sean Kelly.
A Lee Dermody hat-trick helped New Brighton Reserves to a 6-0 rout of relegated Christleton Reserves.
Goals from young Gary Knight and Mike New cemented Mallaby's 2-0 victory over Fairfield Athletic, while Willaston won by the same scoreline against Ashville Reserves. Dave Forbes and Carl Dunbar were the hot-shots.
Two wins from their remaining four games will guarantee Bronze Social promotion from Division Three.
Saturday's 6-1 demolition of Shaftesbury was confirmed by hat-tricks from Marc Sheratt and Shaun Mooney.
Nearest rivals Mossley Hill Athletic maintained interest after two goals from Simon Ellison set up a 5-0 win over FC Pensby. Further efforts from Kevin Frankland, Neil McCarthy and Phil Frankland completed the total.
Ashton Gibiliru scored both goals in Fairfield Athletic Reserves' 2-1 win at Manor Athletic, while James McShane weighed in with a treble in Runcorn Town Reserves' 4-3 victory at Focus.
Billy Graham and Phil Owen plundered the goals in Mersey Royal's 2-1 success at Blacon YC Reserves, but two from John Campbell failed to prevent St Werburgh's from crashing 5-2 at Capenhurst Villa Reserves.
Richmond Raith Rovers' 3-1 triumph over Hale was endorsed by goals from Dom Gilchrist, Paul Goothwaite and Dave Allen.
In the Youth Division, Tony Evans, Paul Wilson and John Cain obliged for South Liverpool in their 3-0 win at Maghull and a Gavin O'Keefe double steered champions Jacobs to a 2-1 result at Chester Nomads.
