The magnificent plans are part of the waterfront redevelopment scheme that will transform the Birkenhead and Liverpool docklands into an iconic destination to rival international cities.

Entitled Wirral Waters and Liverpool Waters, the £10bn proposals will turn hundreds of acres of derelict land into a "world class vision."

Stunning images unveiled at Liverpool Town Hall today showed Peel's ambitions to put Merseyside on the map amongst destinations such as New York and Dubai.

It will see clusters of skyscrapers, restaurants, bars, a futuristic monorail and homes for thousands of people, including innovative new penthouse apartment pods to rest on the River Mersey.

Taking up to 50 years to complete, Peel's development director Lindsey Ashworth said that the scheme would create "synergy a between the docks" and will become "a world class, mixed use iconic waterfront development of unrivalled quality."

Boosted by the company's purchase of the former Cammell Laird shipyard, the multi-million sq ft scheme will provide major benefits for the local economy creating tens of thousands of new jobs.

Mr Ashworth said: "This development will be a catalyst for these and any other River Mersey plans.

"It is something that we can be proud of - a national treasure and magnet for international investors.

"It beggars belief that the waterfront is in the disgraceful state that it is in at the moment and so we hope to enhance the area's heritage assets when we embark on the beginning of the future of the docks."

He added: "This project will be the pebble in the pond sending ripples throughout Liverpool and Wirral."
